A great Brazilian isn’t just about what happens in the studio — the way you prep beforehand and care for your skin in the days after makes the difference between skin that stays smooth and comfortable and skin that fights you with irritation and ingrown hairs. Here’s the routine I give every client at my studio in SW Calgary.
Before your appointment
Let the hair grow. You need about a quarter inch for wax to grip — two to three weeks after your last shave. (If you’re coming in for sugaring instead, an eighth of an inch is enough.) The night before, gently exfoliate the area with a soft washcloth or mild scrub; this lifts away dead skin so the wax can release hairs cleanly. On the day: shower, arrive with clean and dry skin, and skip moisturizer, oils, and powders in the area — they interfere with the wax’s grip.
A few smaller tips that genuinely help: wear loose, breathable clothing to your appointment; avoid heavy caffeine right before if you’re sensitive; and if you can, avoid booking in the few days right before your period, when skin sensitivity peaks. If you use retinol, tretinoin, or exfoliating acids anywhere near the bikini area, tell me before we start — these thin the skin and we may need to adjust.
The first 48 hours: the rule that matters most
After a Brazilian, every hair follicle in the area is open. It takes about 48 hours for them to close, and everything on this list exists to protect them while they do:
- No heat — hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, and very hot showers. Heat opens follicles further and invites irritation.
- No swimming — pools, lakes, and hot tubs carry bacteria that open follicles don’t need.
- No tanning — freshly waxed skin burns much more easily, sun or bed.
- No intense workouts — sweat and friction are the two things most likely to cause post-wax breakouts.
- No tight synthetic clothing — cotton and loose layers only. Let the skin breathe.
- No exfoliating, perfumed products, or intimate activity — keep the area clean, cool, and dry.
Mild pinkness for a few hours is completely normal. If your skin runs sensitive, a cool compress or a thin layer of pure aloe in the first evening settles it quickly.
Day 3 onward: preventing ingrown hairs
Once the 48 hours are up, your job flips from protecting the skin to keeping it clear. Gently exfoliate two to three times a week — a soft mitt, washcloth, or mild scrub in the shower is enough. Follow with a light, fragrance-free moisturizer daily. This combination keeps dead skin from capping the follicles, which is exactly how ingrown hairs start. If you’re prone to ingrowns, an ingrown-hair serum used a few times a week from day three genuinely helps.
Between now and your next appointment
Resist the razor. Shaving between waxes resets your hair’s growth cycle and makes the next appointment more uncomfortable. Book your next Brazilian wax for three to four weeks out — that keeps all the hair on the same cycle, and each appointment gets quicker, easier, and smoother. Your skin will thank you for the consistency.
