When I was setting up this studio, one of the decisions I thought hardest about was which wax to use. It might sound like a small thing — wax is wax, right? But if you've ever walked out of a waxing appointment with red, swollen skin that took half a day to calm down, you know it's not a small thing at all. I made a deliberate choice to use Bush Balm wax, and I want to tell you why, because I think it says something important about how we run things here.
What I saw before I switched
In the early days of the studio, I tried a few different waxes — some of the more affordable, widely available options that a lot of studios in Calgary use. And I started noticing a pattern I didn't like. Clients would leave with skin that was red for hours. Some came back the next time with bumps or ingrown hairs they hadn't had before. A few mentioned they'd almost cancelled their follow-up appointment because the reaction had put them off.
Calgary's climate makes this worse, honestly. We have dry air for much of the year, and skin that's already a little dehydrated or reactive tends to respond more strongly to harsh or synthetic wax formulas. What might be a mild irritant in a more humid climate can cause real redness and inflammation here. I saw it enough times that I knew I needed to find something better.
What Bush Balm is — and why it's different
Bush Balm is a Canadian brand, which I'll admit gave me a small extra reason to try it. But the reason I kept using it has nothing to do with where it's made — it's about what it does for skin.
Their wax formula is built around natural oils and gentle ingredients rather than the synthetic resins that show up in cheaper waxes. It's a warm wax, which means it's applied directly and removed without strips. The warm wax method is gentler than strip waxing in general — it grips the hair rather than bonding aggressively to the skin, which means less trauma to the skin surface on removal. For sensitive skin, for clients with rosacea, for anyone who's had a bad reaction to waxing before — this difference is noticeable immediately.
The formula also stays at a comfortable temperature, which reduces the risk of heat-related irritation. I've used it on clients with some of the most reactive skin I've seen, and it consistently performs without causing the kind of reaction I was seeing with other products.
What changed when I switched
The difference was visible quite quickly. Clients were leaving without the angry red skin I'd been seeing before. Fewer complaints. People were able to come back on their regular schedule without feeling like their skin needed two weeks to recover.
I think of one client in particular — she'd been coming to me for brow threading and eventually asked about waxing for her upper lip. She'd had a really bad experience at another salon: left with swollen skin around her mouth that lasted three days. She was understandably nervous about trying again. We used Bush Balm, I worked slowly and carefully, and she was genuinely shocked afterward. Her skin was calm. Slightly pink for maybe twenty minutes, and then nothing. She's been back every six weeks since.
That kind of result is what I'm aiming for every time.
Who benefits most from this wax
If you have sensitive skin, this matters to you. Rosacea, eczema-prone skin, dry skin — all of these do better with a gentler formula. If you've had bad reactions to waxing in the past, whether at a chain salon or somewhere else, it's worth giving it another try with the right product. A lot of my clients from Bridlewood, Shawnessy, Millrise, and the surrounding SW Calgary neighbourhoods come to me specifically because they've had skin reactions elsewhere and want something different. I hear this story regularly.
Bush Balm is also a good choice if you're simply newer to waxing and want to start with a more gentle experience while your skin adjusts. There's no reason your first few waxing appointments should feel punishing.
Why we pay more for it
I won't pretend this wax is the cheapest option I could stock. It isn't. But this studio has never been run on the principle of cutting product costs and hoping clients don't notice the difference. They always notice. Your skin tells you when something isn't right, and it tells everyone else too when you leave with a reaction.
The way I see it, my job is to make sure you walk out feeling better than when you walked in — cleaner, neater, comfortable in your own skin. Choosing the right wax is part of that job, not an afterthought. I'd rather charge a fair price and use a product I genuinely believe in than cut the margin and compromise the result.
If you've been nervous about waxing because of a past experience, or if you've just been curious about what a thoughtful, quality-focused studio looks like, I'd love to have you come in. We take our time, we use products we believe in, and we care about what your skin looks and feels like when you leave. You can see our full waxing services and pricing on the services page.
