I've threaded hundreds of brows over the years here at the studio in Bridlewood SW, Calgary — and without fail, the clients who are most nervous walking in are the ones who become the most loyal regulars. Threading has a bit of a reputation for being intimidating, especially if you've only ever heard about it secondhand. So I thought I'd write this for anyone who's been curious but hasn't quite taken the plunge yet.
The truth is, a threading appointment at Marwah Thread & Wax Studio is nothing to stress about. But there are a few simple things you can do beforehand to make the experience smoother — and to make sure you walk out with the best possible result. If you'd like to check our full services and pricing before you come in, that's always a good place to start. Here's what I always wish I could tell first-timers before they arrive.
1. Come with clean skin — and hold off on the heavy moisturiser that morning
This one surprises people. Threading uses a twisted cotton thread to catch and remove hair at the follicle — and it needs a bit of grip to work properly. If you've applied a thick SPF sunscreen, a heavy moisturiser, or a lot of makeup right before your appointment, the thread can slip rather than catch. The result is a less precise treatment, and it can take a little longer too.
My recommendation: cleanse your face normally the night before and moisturise well — dry skin can actually be more sensitive, so hydrating the night before is a good idea. But the morning of your appointment, just a light wash and nothing heavy around the brow area. Come in fresh and clean and we'll be in great shape.
2. Don't pluck or wax for at least three to four weeks before
This is probably the most important one, and it's where I see the most first-time mistakes. Threading works by grabbing individual hairs or small groups of hairs and removing them from the root. For that to happen, there needs to be enough hair growth above the skin surface for the thread to catch.
If you've been plucking in the days or even a week before your appointment, you may not have enough growth for me to work with — and I'll have to turn you away and ask you to come back. It happens more often than you'd think, and I always feel terrible because I know the client was excited to come in. Three to four weeks of no plucking is the safe rule. If you've been tweezing daily, give it a full month. Your brows will be a little wild by then, but that's exactly what we need to work with.
3. Take a mild painkiller beforehand if you know you're sensitive
Threading is not painful in the way most people imagine. I describe it as a quick, tiny snap — like a rubber band flicking your skin very lightly and very fast. Most clients say it's far less uncomfortable than they expected. And because threading is so precise and so fast, the whole brow is usually done in ten to fifteen minutes.
That said, everyone's pain tolerance is different, and there's no shame in taking a mild over-the-counter painkiller — like ibuprofen — about thirty minutes before your appointment if you're known to be on the sensitive side. It takes the edge off the initial sting, and it can also help reduce any minor redness afterward. You don't have to do this, but it's a perfectly fine option for your first visit while you figure out how your skin responds.
4. Tell me about any prescription topicals or skin medications you're using
This one is about safety, and I feel strongly about it. Certain skincare medications — retinol, retinoids, Accutane, and some prescription topicals — work by accelerating cell turnover or thinning the top layer of skin. When the skin is thinner or more fragile from these products, threading can sometimes cause irritation or, in more sensitive cases, a small amount of skin lifting where the hair is removed.
It doesn't happen often, but it's something I always want to know about before I start. If you're on any of these, please mention it when you book or when you arrive — it doesn't mean we can't thread your brows, it just means I'll take extra care and perhaps adjust my technique. Your skin's safety always comes first at this studio.
5. Trust the shape consultation — and let me do my job
I say this with the warmest possible intention: first-time clients sometimes come in with a very firm idea of exactly which hairs should be removed and exactly what shape they want, and they want to direct the process hair by hair. I completely understand the impulse — your brows are on your face, after all. But here's the thing: I do this every single day. I've shaped brows on hundreds of women across Calgary, and I know how to read a face — where your natural arch sits, what shape will lift your eye, what will balance your features.
Before I start, I always map the brow shape and explain what I'm planning to do. Please feel free to ask questions and share your preferences at that point. But once we've agreed on the plan and I pick up that thread, trust the process. The results speak for themselves. My clients here in Bridlewood, Shawnessy, Millrise, and all across SW Calgary come back month after month because they learned to trust the work — and their brows have never looked better for it.
Our studio is a women-only space, which I know matters to a lot of my clients. Whether you're coming for the first time or the fiftieth, you'll be in a calm, private environment where everything moves at your pace.
Most first-timers leave a little surprised by how quick it was, how neat the result is, and how much less uncomfortable it was than they expected. And then they book their next appointment before they walk out the door. I hope to see you soon.
